SharePoint Upgrade

Over the past two years, AKG has successfully conducted two enterprise-level migrations of SharePoint from the 2007 to 2010 versions of SharePoint. At a major government organization, the migration involved over 42,000 users, 2,800 site facilitators, 37,000 sites and almost 8 terabytes of data. At another government organization, over 20,000 users were involved on a platform that supports critical mission-related processes. In both cases, AKG worked with the technical professionals with responsibility for server farm administration.

In both cases the actual migration was done in less than five days (over a weekend). There was minimal disruption in service to end-users. They were trained in the new environment before launch, many of them participated in the ramp-up to migration by doing things like data clean-up, and clear communications kept them informed about key events.

In both cases, successful migration was based on a SharePoint methodology that AKG has developed over ten years of experience with SharePoint. Because we had created a large population of qualified administrators embedded in the business groups, we were able to get them to help prepare for the migration by communicating to their offices, cleaning up data, investigating broken links, and doing user testing in the new environment prior to go-live. We actively discourage large-scale use of custom code in our SharePoint programs, so there was minimal need to rewrite custom programs for migration. Our help desk and user-support personnel were integral to the process – they were fully prepared to work with their embedded systems admin partners to address bug-fix, and user bewilderment on a prompt basis.

AKG has worked over the course of these successful migrations to transfer best practices and client-side skills to our customers, so that we are able to create the conditions for the next successful migration as soon as the current one ends. As organizations go to the Cloud and Office 365, the pace of migration is likely to accelerate and we've proven several times that our clients need not be stuck on MOSS when SharePoint 2013 rolls out.

Press Release (Reston, VA) – May 15, 2013

The Spinal Research Foundation event on Saturday May 18 raises awareness of spinal health and contributes to life-changing research and educational programs.

Applied Knowledge Group, Inc. (AKG) is proud to sponsor the 6th Annual "We've Got Your Back" 5K Run/Walk, the signature awareness and fundraising event of the Spinal Research Foundation (SRF). The Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, May 18 in Reston, Virginia, and includes a Spinal Health Fair where people can learn how their spine works and what they can do to prevent injury. The Virginia Spine Institute will offer complimentary bone density scans during the event, which can determine if someone is at risk for bone fractures or Osteoporosis.

The Run/Walk is also an occasion to celebrate "Spinal Champions" who have overcome back and neck pain and are no longer suffering. Funds raised at the event contribute directly to life-changing research and educational programs conducted by SRF.

"Spinal disease knows no boundaries and affects everyone, male and female, young and old," said Thomas C. Schuler, MD, president of the Spinal Research Foundation. "More than 90 percent of the population will suffer from severe neck and/or low back pain during their lifetime. Approximately ten percent of these people develop chronic pain, which means that at any given time, 35 million people in the United States are directly affected by disabling pain and many more indirectly."

"AKG is proud to sponsor this event year after year to support the life changing research that will benefit millions of people" notes Michael Howland, one of the Spinal Research Foundation's founders, and Chief Executive Officer of AKG's parent company, Tioga Holdings.

The "We've Got Your Back" event will be held at SRF headquarters at 1831 Wiehle Avenue, Reston, Virginia. The Spinal Health Fair begins at 8:00 a.m. and Opening Ceremonies start at 8:30 a.m. The 5K race begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by a one mile run/walk. It will be on the new and improved race course, which runs along the W&OD Railroad Regional Park Trail. Winners of the race will be receiving a cash prize ranging from $50-300. (Age group winners will receive gift certificates.) All children to finish the one mile run/walk will be given a commemorative medal.

Applied Knowledge Group and Microsoft publish a Customer Solution Case study highlighting collaborative solutions within the Federal Government

Press Release (Reston, VA) – November 14, 2011

Reston, Va., [Nov 14, 2011] The Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has deployed a highly successful SharePoint-based collaborative platform – the Enterprise Collaboration Network (ECN) - across the entire organization. USCIS worked closely with AKG and Microsoft to build a mission-relevant collaborative environment that went from zero to 21,000 users in 18 months. Equally as important the vast majority of the work-related solutions were created by USCIS personnel, driving an overall use rate of over 50%, which means that more than 10,000 users access the system daily. USCIS personnel are using ECN to coordinate naturalization ceremonies nationwide, manage key financial processes, coordinate with multiple field offices, and upgrade the critical body of USCIS policies. New solutions emerge daily because USCIS personnel have been trained to configure their own SharePoint solutions with the guidance of a robust governance framework.

"AKG was very good at distilling the business challenges we faced. From there, we took the prototypes that Microsoft built and created solutions for the entire pilot projects concurrently, in less than a week," says Melvin Brown, the former Chief of Staff, Office of Information Technology, USCIS.

"We have significant experience within the Federal Government and work seamlessly with Microsoft to create solutions that eliminate collaborative barriers" said Andy Campbell a Senior Partner at Applied Knowledge Group. "I can't think of collaboration software that pushes as far into the daily work processes of an organization as Microsoft Office SharePoint technologies do when well implemented."

The entire case study can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Microsoft-Office-SharePoint-Server-2007/U.S.-Citizenship-and-Immigration-Services/Federal-Government-Employees-Embrace-Collaboration-Solution-to-Drive-Efficiencies/4000011412

AKG SharePoint Training Classes at DHS Continue to Sellout

Press Release (Reston, VA) – November 2, 2011

Reston, Va., [November 2, 2011] Applied Knowledge Group's user-level and advanced SharePoint training programs at the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Citizen Immigration Services (DHS/USCIS) continue to be filled to over capacity in their second year of being offered. In order to meet growing demand at DHS, AKG and Microsoft have begun to offer facilitator-led SharePoint training to USCIS personnel nation-wide via Webex.

"At AKG we start planning customized training from the moment a client engagement begins. We'll identify different groups and levels within your user community and determine what each group needs to know to participate in and benefit from a new collaboration or knowledge management approach" notes Andy Campbell, AKG's Co-Founder and Senior Partner.

At USCIS there are currently over 17,000 end users on SharePoint and growing. AKG's training is highly effective because it is integrated with a proven SharePoint user adoption framework, which includes: rapid turnaround of SharePoint configuration for business needs, the development of an network of SharePoint "facilitators" drawn from client workgroups, and a training curriculum tailored to the organizations specific needs.

The rapid growth of the DHS/USCIS network, 30 to 15,000 users in less than one year, attests to the effectiveness of AKG's close partnership with Microsoft Consulting Services and its training and adoption framework. This effective customized training has enabled them to carry only 1.5 full-time help desk employees to support this userbase on their SharePoint network.

AKG's suite of customized training includes: in-person/on-site classes, virtual online classes with a live trainer, and automated computer based training (CBT). Contact us to see what AKG's training can do for your project or team.
