Wikis can be a powerful tool for collecting and organizing the wealth of tacit knowledge that resides in the minds of your employees. For example, a basic use for a wiki might be to capture the lessons learned for a project. You might begin by listing a few best practices, tips and tricks, and pitfalls that you experienced. Then you encourage your teammates, stakeholders, and perhaps even your client to add their thoughts and ideas. As time goes on, the wiki evolves to become a comprehensive repository of tacit knowledge that is available to everyone.
One advantage MOSS and v3 has over its predecessors is that wiki functionality is standard. Although this functionality is new for both MOSS and v3, organizations using WSS v2 can still simulate the wiki feature with the use of a custom CorasWorks web part. AKG created one of these for the SharePoint Virtual Work Environment (VWE) project at the United States Marine Corps (USMC). In their case, they are employing it to help support user training efforts with good success.
In another post here, we’ll walk you through the steps so you can also use this technique.
