Reston, Va., [November 12, 2009] Applied Knowledge Group's (AKG) Chief Operating Officer Jim O’Farrell and Marketing Manager Joan Muschamp joined Microsoft and other technology partners on Monday November 9th at the Annual “Operation USO Care Package Day”. Microsoft rallied their partner companies in the local area to help the United Service Organization (USO) assemble care packages for U.S. Soldiers serving overseas. Over 100 volunteers, including many of the Washington Capitals hockey players, participated at the Kettler Ice Rink to kick off this first of many 2009 “A Salute to Our Troops” Microsoft sponsored activities.
Joan Muschamp expressed “We were honored to attend the program both personally and on behalf of AKG. As the holiday season is upon us, it is important to keep in mind and support those who are risking their lives overseas to keep us safe at home.” Muschamp and O’Farrell postponed their business day to participate in a busy assembly line of volunteers that produced 5,200 care packages that day, topping the goal of 5,000. Multiple items were donated for the care packages including: Microsoft Zune trial cards, prepaid international phone cards, sunscreen, travel size toiletries, lens wipe cloths, CDs, DVDs, playing cards, magazines, and personal messages of support from the donors and volunteers.
Microsoft has put together this year’s “A Salute to Our Troops Program” to help brighten the holiday season for U.S. troops and their families. On December 20th Microsoft will treat 8,200 troops and their families to a private showing of the traveling Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular at DC’s Verizon Center, along with other fundraising activities hosted in conjunction with Washington Capitals' NHL team sporting events. 100% of the proceeds from these Microsoft sponsored activities will benefit the USO of Metropolitan Washington.
