The Spinal Research Foundation event on Saturday May 14 raises awareness of spinal health and contributes to life-changing research and educational programs
Reston, Va., [March 10, 2011] Applied Knowledge Group, Inc. (AKG) is proud to sponsor the 4th Annual “We’ve Got Your Back” 5K Run/Walk, the signature awareness and fundraising event of the Spinal Research Foundation (SRF). The Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, May 14 in Reston, Virginia, and includes a Spinal Health Fair where people can learn how their spine works and what they can do to prevent injury. The Virginia Spine Institute will offer complimentary bone density scans during the event, which can determine if someone is at risk for bone fractures or Osteoporosis.
The Run/Walk is also an occasion to celebrate “Spinal Champions” who have overcome back and neck pain and are no longer suffering. Funds raised at the event contribute directly to life-changing research and educational programs conducted by SRF.
“Spinal disease knows no boundaries and affects everyone, male and female, young and old,” said Thomas C. Schuler, MD, president of the Spinal Research Foundation. “More than 90 percent of the population will suffer from severe neck and/or low back pain during their lifetime. Approximately ten percent of these people develop chronic pain, which means that at any given time, 35 million people in the United States are directly affected by disabling pain and many more indirectly.”
“AKG is proud to sponsor this event year after year to support the life changing research that will benefit millions of people” notes Michael Howland, one of the Spinal Research Foundation’s founders, and Chief Executive Officer of AKG’s parent company, Tioga Holdings.
Four current and former Washington Redskins players who have successfully dealt with neck or back pain are expected to participate in the event. Members of the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders will also attend.
The “We’ve Got Your Back” event will be held at SRF headquarters at 1831 Wiehle Avenue, Reston, Virginia. The Spinal Health Fair begins at 8:00 a.m. and Opening Ceremonies start at 8:45 a.m. The 5K race begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by a one mile run/walk. It will be on the new 2011 race course, which runs along the W&OD Railroad Regional Park Trail. Winners of the race will be receiving a cash prize ranging from $50-300. (Age group winners will receive gift certificates.) All children to finish the one mile run/walk will be given a commemorative medal.
